Thailand–Cambodia: A Ceasefire… or Just a Temporary Pause?

On October 26, 2025, a joint statement was signed following discussions between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia. Many viewed this as a positive sign that could help ease tensions between the two neighboring countries, which share a complex history and sensitive issues that require careful management.
However, from another perspective, the Military & Diplomacy page cautioned that this should be viewed with careful consideration, suggesting that the situation may only represent a “temporary ceasefire” rather than genuine cooperation. In other words, despite smiles and pleasant words at the negotiation table, both sides may still be cautious and closely monitoring each other from a strategic standpoint.
Following the high-level discussions, rumors emerged that Thailand was planning to reopen the border checkpoint with Cambodia in Sa Kaeo province, a strategic area for both the economy and security in the eastern region. However, the First Army Area Command (FAC) clarified that “there is no order to open the checkpoint” at this time.
This statement highlights that, even if policy-level relations appear smooth, caution remains crucial on the ground. Thai officials must carefully assess the situation to prevent misunderstandings or actions that could affect security along the border.
