Chiang Mai is creating a new history, poised to become a living “World Heritage Site”
"Chiangmai’s Old Town" to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, with the goal of achieving this by 2026, the 730 th anniversary of the founding of the capital of the Chiangmai Lanna. It is expected that International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will visit the area around June 2026 to gather information for consideration in November 2026.
Important temples that have been applied for World Heritage Site include Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Sing Varamahavihara, Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep RatchaVaravihara, Wat Suan Dok (Royal Temple), Wat Chet Yot (Royal Temple), and Wat Umong, as well as the 5 city gates and 4 corners of the city wall, to preserve their original ancient architecture and be as consistent with historical narratives as possible, and to remain relevant to the lives of the people.
